Research team on avian diversity and vegetation structure gathers in Columbus

Collaborators from The Ohio State University, the University of Wisconsin–Madison, and the Cornell Lab of Ornithology met in Columbus to review progress and plan future work. This NSF-funded project aims to understand how vegetation complexity—quantified using LiDAR—shapes the assembly of bird communities. We had a great time brainstorming new ideas and developing exciting directions for future projects.

Reymond defends his Masters thesis!

Reymond has successfully defended his Masters thesis on seasonal variation in avian functional distinctiveness across the globe. His work delves into what makes bird species unique at both local and global scales, how these species-level distinctiveness values affect assemblage-level distinctiveness, and how this all changes across seasons. Congrats, Reymond! You made us proud!

New preprint: Spatial and seasonal variation in avian dietary strategies

New preprint! André, Reymond, and Marta publish a global-scale assessment of the seasonality of dietary space and its environmental drivers. We show strong seasonal variation in birds’ dietary space at both the assemblage and species levels globally, with the most pronounced intra-annual dietary shifts occurring in the temperate and boreal regions of the Northern Hemisphere.

Welcome, François Leroy!

François joins at part of the NSF-funded Global Center on AI and Biodiversity Change. His project will explore building demographic models in a machine learning framework, and then applying these models to understand the drivers of the demographic processes for birds. We are excited to welcome François to our lab!
